AIDS.
yes.
A-I-D-S

arent those just the 4 letters that patients and families never want to hear when they go for a check up at the hospital? and yet, its a threat thats all too real in society today and i really feel that more people should be aware of it.

Definition

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the final and most serious stage of HIV disease, which causes severe damage to the immune system.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AIDS begins when a person with HIV infection has a CD4 cell count below 200. CD4 cells are also called "T-cells" or "helper cells"; they are a type of immune cell. AIDS is also defined by numerous opportunistic infections and cancers that occur in the presence of HIV infection.

yeah. as i said, im pretty sure that all of us know, recognise, and fear AIDS, but just how accurate is our knowledge about the deadly disease? i mean, we all know that fatality is a very real threat with AIDS, but how many actually clearly know the risks and causes involved. in this case, ignorance is NOT bliss. its essential that people know what to and not to do to keep themselves not to put themselves at risk.

and that brings me to my second point, the unfortunate people who have already contracted HIV / AIDS. you hear stories about how families have been torn apart because of the disease. and no no, its not like their family members were taken by the disease or anything, but rather they feel ashamed of the sick, and thus refuse to come into contact with them. absolutely ridiculous and absurd if you ask me. AIDS / HIV is an illness, a condition, and instead of helping or trying to help, we're doing the reverse and abandoning them in their time of need. sure speaks volumes about the selfish mentality of our society today.

besides, i guess the greatest reason for such behavior is still down to not understanding the true nature of HIV/AIDS. there is the common belief, fueled by countless depictions in drama serials, that HIV / AIDS is solely the result of frivolous sexual habits and thus says something nasty about the morals of the person who contracts it. however, this is not necessarily the case. think blood transfusions and mother to child hereditary transfer, are we really going to condemn all these people for being unlucky?

ps: i hope that yall don't expect me to become some sort of activist just cos ive done this write up, its kinda as a favour for a friend who's trying to spread the word about the spreading terror of HIV / AIDS. a darned noble deed if you ask me. do try and help too, thanks all.
